What are Variable Speed Drives used for?

Variable speed drives (VSD) are devices that control the speed and torque of AC motors by varying the frequency of the input electricity. These VSDs are used in industrial applications where the speed of an electrical motor need to be controlled in order for the production and or process applications to function as intended. Variable speed drives are placed between the motor and the electrical supply to the motor, and the supply to the motor is then regulated by the variable speed drive.

Rectifiers inside the motor drive converts the incoming AC power to DC power which is then fed into the capacitors inside the VSD. The DC power is then changed into the output AC power thet gets fed to the motor. This is done by flowing the power from the capacitors to the inverter. This allows the frequency and the voltage that is fed into to the electric motor to be changed by the variable speed drive according to your process demands.
