Accelerometer Sensor: A Brief Rundown

Types of Accelerometers

There are three types of accelerometers, each suited to different applications. These types consist of:

  • Capacitive Accelerometer: These accelerometers are very common and make use of changes in the electrical capacitance to determine the acceleration of an object. 
  • Piezoelectric Accelerometer: These accelerometers detect a change in acceleration by making use of and sensing the piezoelectric materials that produce electricity when they are subjected to physical pressure. This method of detection is also known as the piezoelectric effect.

Where is the Accelerometer Sensor Used?

Accelerometers are widely used in a variety of objects and devices. Some of these devices include: 

  • Wind Turbines: Today’s wind turbines require an accelerometer to monitor the movement and sway inflicted on their mast by the wind. In reaction to this, the blades shift and “feather” in order to create stability. 
  • Cars: Often coupled with airbags, accelerometers measure the force that is applied onto the car which triggers a chain reaction that releases the airbags within a car. 
  • Cell Phones: Most smartphones of today contain an accelerometer. This is what allows your phone to track your steps, or flip its screen from landscape to portrait.
