There’s no shortage of videos on the internet that show how to test an encoder using an encoder tester. The first step is to understand which type of encoder you are testing, whether it is magnetic or optical, absolute or incremental, or shafted/hollow.
However, steps for testing an encoder motor are reasonably simple. The steps are as follows:
- Apply your DC current tester on the black and red wires.
- Properly check the voltage for both the phases. It should be extremely close to 5 volts and a clean square looking wave should appear on the display.
- If your signal is disturbed or distorted in any way, it may be caused by difficulties with a potential air gap. The air gap present is a major aspect of the functioning of your encoder motor. In the event that the air gap is incorrect it may cause huge problems in terms of functioning. It may also happen if your voltage is low.
- The gap needed for the perfect functioning should be approximately 0.15 millimetres to 0.2 millimetres, also depending on the model of motor encoder that you are using.
- You can view the results and monitor your encoder at any point by using your encoder tester. The best way to monitor your encoder is to record your results regularly.

BaumerHubner Encoder Tester HNQ1100
The Baumer Hübner Encoder Tester HENQ 1100 is a hand-held device used for testing incremental encoders. The Encoder Tester is a precision device and should only be used by skilled personnel.
Continuous monitoring and display of:
- the speed, angular position, and position of the zero pulse
- the phase shift between K1 (A) and K2 (B)
- the pulse/pause ratio of K1 (A) and K2 (B)
- the voltage range of the encoder output signals
- the supply voltage and current drawn by the encoder, with the power consumption calculated from these values
Continuous error monitoring:
- elimination of signal disturbances through adaptive filtering
- comparison of the nominal/actual number of pulses per turn
- errors in connection with the marker pulse
- check of the quadrature coding by evaluation of the track signals and the marker pulse
