
What is a Signal Converter?
A signal converter is a part of a larger process, known as signal conditioning. It is a device that receives one type of signal, and transforms that signal into another type of signal. The signal that is produced by the converter, is normalised to a specification that is required for a specific application. Signal converters are often used in industrial as well as commercial environments.
Types of Signal Converters
Due to the variety of applications in which signal converters are used, there are multiple types of signal converters.
Analog and Digital
- Analog-to-Digital Converter: Also known as ADC’s, analog-to-digital converters receive analog signals and transform them into digital information. This allows a microprocessor to read, process, and analyse the information.
- Digital-to-Analog Converter: These converters do exactly the opposite to ADC’s. It does this by taking digital information and transforming it into an analog signal that is directly proportionate to that of the digital information.
Frequency and Voltage
- Frequency Converter: This converter takes the signal that it receives and calibrates it according to the required frequency. This frequency is then produced for easy use.
- Voltage Converter: Similar to frequency converters, voltage converters receive certain voltage inputs and calibrates those inputs into the required voltage. This scaled voltage is then output for easy use.
- Frequency-to-Voltage Converter: These converters take the frequency signals that they receive, and convert them to an analog voltage output that is proportional to the original frequency.
- Voltage-to-Frequency Converter: A voltage-to-frequency converter has the inverse purpose to a frequency-to-voltage converter, transforming the input analog voltage, to an output frequency signal.
Current and Charge
- Current Loop Converter: This converter receives signals that are then transformed into analog signals, and output for easy use.
- Current-to-Voltage Converter: Here the converter receives the input current, and produces an output voltage that is suitable for use in its specified application.
- Charge Converter: These converters receive a charge from a sensor and transform that charge into either voltage or current, depending on the application.
